Science Learning Goal:
I can describe the four states of matter.
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. In primary school, children learn about matter, which can exist as one of four states: solid, liquid, gas, or plasma. A solid is matter that has a definite shape, size, and volume. An example of a solid is a ceramic cup. A liquid is matter that does not have definite shape and size but it has a definite volume. An example of a liquid is water. A gas is matter that does not have a definite shape, size, and volume. An example of a gas is helium inside a balloon. A plasma is matter that does not have a definite shape, size, and volume. Unlike gas, it is made up of charged particles. An example of plasma is lightning.
