Numeracy is the ability to identify and apply math concepts in all areas of life.
Help build children's math skills through play. Everyday activities such as counting, identifying shapes, and recognising sizes can help children develop math skills.
About Math Skills
Numeracy is the ability to identify and apply math concepts in all areas of life.
Numeracy skills involve counting, sequencing, estimating, measuring, comparing objects, sorting, recognising patterns, identify shapes, solving adding and subtracting problems, and so on.
Learning and Building Math Skills
Your child's everyday experiences are full of learning opportunities that lay the foundations for mathematics. Here are some tips for helping your children build math skills.
Use spatial words to describe what you and your child are seeing and doing together. For example, "This big rock is heavy" or "Let's sit on the nearest bench."
Name the numbers you see around you, like the numbers on buses, road signs, and letterboxes.
Talk about the activities you do that happen at certain times of the day. For example, "Let's go to the playground at 9 am." or "We'll eat dinner at 6 pm."
Have them to count and sort the objects they use or find. For example, they can count and sort rocks, toys, fruits, and sticks.
Go for a nature walk and encourage your child to describe and compare leaves, rocks, or flowers.
Let your child help you in cooking and preparing food. Your child can measure, pour, and mix. This will help your child learn skills like counting, measuring, estimating, and adding.
Sing songs and read books with rhymes and repeats to help your child understand patterns.
