Teaching your preschooler about the alphabet and beginning sounds is the one of the important steps towards learning to read and write. Check out these fun letter-of-the-week activities that can help your learners develop core skills such as letter recognition, beginning sound identification, and letter formation. And yes, they are all FREE with your Canva for Education account!
1. Poster and Vocabulary Cards
These poster and vocabulary cards display the different words that will be learned by your English language learners. For the vocabulary cards, print the pages, laminate for durability, and then cut them apart. Make a hole in the top left corner and secure the cards using a key ring or pipe cleaner. These cards can be used as matching cards and/or flash cards.
2. Flipbook
This Letter of the Week flip book is a fun, interactive, and engaging activity that provides your learners with the opportunity to interact with the letter in many different ways. Let each child say the sound of the letter. Read the flip book first and let them repeat after you. Have the child trace the word and color the picture.
3. Letter Recognition and Writing Worksheets
These letter recognition worksheets are simple and easy to use! Let the children use crayons and dabbers to find the letter of the week. Let them practice writing the letter with the Letter Formation Tracing Page.
4. Vocabulary Activity Pages
These vocabulary activities are best for your ESL/ELL newcomers. They will read the sentence and color the correct picture. They will also connect the word to its correct picture.
5. Writing and Drawing Worksheets
On the writing pages, children will look at the picture and write a sentence that tells about the picture. They can use the given helpful words to construct their sentence. A sentence construction checklist guide is also provided to help them write their sentence correctly. The checklist includes:
- I can use capital letters.
- I can use punctuation marks.
- I can write on the line.
- I can use correct spelling.
6. Numeracy Skills Practice
Math worksheets are also included in this packet! These include free graphing worksheets, counting activities, and I Spy game worksheets. These are fun math activities that you can give for your early finishers.
